Controlled descent

For both work at height and rescue, access from above is preferable because it allows one to take advantage of the force of gravity. Descenders are designed to regulate friction and control the descent on a fixed rope. They allow a worker to position himself at any point on the rope. Some descenders such as the Petzl I'd can also be used to safely belay a leader using rock climbing techniques.

Ease of use

Self-braking descenders provide ease of use and increased safety when moving on a single rope. The braking mechanism consists of a pivoting cam which pinches the rope and brakes the descent when the handle is released.
