These must conform to EN362 (Industrial) or EN12275 (Mountaineering). The mountaineering standard exceeds the requirements of the industrial standard. Connectors are used to join components together and must be of a type where at least two actions are required to open the connector - for example 'Screwgate' or 'twistlock'. Some types have three actions to open them and there is now a connector that requires four actions. Most arborists insist on triple action connectors. For example the Petzl Kador (steel), Am'D and William Ball Lock and Triact. Connectors are manufactured in many shapes and sizes. Each shape has a purpose. For most applications the 'D' shape is preferable because the load runs along the spine, which is the strongest part, so 'D' shapes tend to be stronger than oval shapes of the same size. For pulley systems, the oval should be used to keep the pulley in line with the load applied. There is another type of connector that is also used, called Maillon Rapides - these are rigid screw link connectors without a hinged gate, and are available in various shapes and sizes.
